We are beginning the Chemistry unit. The kids are always a bit intimidated by the word Chemistry but I look forward to the unit with the kids.

Students need to write the terms that we have studied so far, pages 6 and 16 have the key terms, on the front of the card and the definition on the back. I would like this done by Wed. the 29th. I am going to use them for a review game of Bingo. :)

Homework check...

Take a look at the Moon tonight. Last night it was very bright, notice tonight how the right side is turning slightly dark at the edge. Look just beneath the moon and you will see another object that is bright that is not twinkling...that is a clue as to what it is. Let me know if you know what it is.
Please check your students planners for the assignments and be sure that they have done it correctly. I am have a few redo the assignments due to not doing it as I had asked. Some are illegible so they may also need to rewrite it. I am trying to get the kids to do as asked the first time, not to make them crazy but a bit serious about assignments. Do your best work always...

Quiz was taken today. Looks good. A review sheet was handed out last night as review for homework. There were 4-5 students for each class that did not do their homework. I would appreciate some help here, please check their planners each evening to be sure that they have what they need to get the assignments completed. This needs to be handled asap for them to be successful since homework in part of their grade. I have spoken to them in a manner as to find out where they went wrong so that they see how to fix the situation, not you or I fixing the issue, such as..."Did you write the assignment in your planner?" "Did you bring home all that you needed for the assignment?" "Be sure to pack your bag before you go to bed to be sure everything is in it." etc....

Mon news

Today the science color sheet was due. There are still a few that did not hand it in. Please check your child's planner and look at homework regularly. The moon phase sheets are filled out by many and again a few are not...help here too.... Quiz Wed. Mrs. Sogard

Sept. 17

I am very pleased with the efforts of the students in coming to class prepared and ready to learn. There are a few students who are leaving the moon phase sheet at home, I need to see that each day. I will look at the day before to see if it is filled out the evening before class and the student will receive one point. I will do this for a month so that the students can earn 30 points for part of their homework grade. Please be sure that your child is bringing home what is needed and if not come back to school and get it if it is not avail on line.
I will be handing out the forms for the kids to get on line to log into Prentice Hall and Gizmos at home. Let me know if you have a problem...

9/14/10 welcome

Welcome to House 2 Science
We will be covering a lot of material in sixth grade such as Chemistry, Energy, Microscope life, and Astronomy to name a few. We will be doing labs of various sorts as well as learning how to describe what occurred in an official formatted lab template. We will begin the year studying Astronomy.

Section 2

We made pancakes today to demonstrate the radiation, conduction, and convection concepts for the second section in the heating and cooling unit.
I will be completing this chapter by the end of the week and will assign review for the break. I hope to complete the unit by the end of Feb., we will see...
Please bring in cans and boxes of food for the food shelf in Greece, we do have many needy families that live among us.

Heating and Cooling unit

We have started a new unit entitled Heating and Cooling.
I have assigned the students the job of describing the activity we did with the three buckets of water from page 176. The students are to describe what happened throughout the activity as well as why. They will review this with a friend on Thursday and final copies are due next class. The purpose of this is to be sure that they can explain activities and labs in a written form for future state testing.
We should be working on chapter 6, section 1 for a few days...I expect to have a quiz at the end of next week on this.
Thank you for the continued support of the students, they have made great gains this year in maturity and organization as well as seeing them become fine young men and women...ugh...Feb already... :)

Energy Alternatives

The energy alternatives research report and project are due on Friday, Jan 15th. We have been working in class researching, writing the report, reviewing expectations. Each student received a worksheet explaining what is expected of them.
Apparently the kids are unable to access my site from home. All were removed from the library by ? so have the kids use google search engines or others to access info. sorry about the inconvenience...

Transformations

10 Energy transformations are due on Monday or Tuesday, depending on what day I see your child. Be sure to show creativity on the project. Don't forget the test is next week for section 3.

Sec 3

We have completed section 2 of the energy unit. This unit consisted of the energy types. The students took a quiz on that last week. We have reviewed section 3 this week on energy transformations and are having a quiz on Tuesday Dec. 15th.
It was nice to see all of the parents that were able to attend the conferences. Continue to support your child in these trying years, the benefits will show in the years to come. :)

Section 2 Energy Forms

We have taken the first quiz on section 1 and are contiuing on with section 2 - pages 151-155. This section includes energy such as Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical, and Chemical energy.

*Students should be reviewing this daily as well as thinking and reviewing what we did in class. *Students are asked to bring home their section 1 test for your signature, please be sure to talk to your child that the second quarter has started, 5 week grades are due on Dec. 15th...

Students are still coming to class without something to write with and materials left in locker, please check to see if your child is in need of organizing their lockers.

Well,well, well :)

I hope that everyone is on the mend with the first bout of the flu. Students reviewed Chapter 5 on Friday. I am working on a few activities the next week.
I am working on the activity from page 146 in the students Prentice Hall books this week. I will be showing them how to write-up the lab template using this activity. I will fill out most of the template as we begin but hope that the students will be able to do most of it by the time May rolls around.
Continue to review the chapter.

Thursday

We have an assembly today so will miss 6th block which is my 4th science class.
I am starting to discuss Energy and have assigned the students to look up potential energy and kinetic energy. We will begin discussing this at length next class.
Tests will be returned on Monday so you can look it over with your child.

Test next week

We will be completing the section on Phases of the Moon, Eclipses and Tides by mid week. We will be reviewing for the final test on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, dependent upon when I have them.
I expect the students to know the terminology that we have been reviewing, the drawings of the phases and eclipses as well as explanations of why we have seasons and what positions the Earth is in during the seasons. All of this has to do with the location of the Sun, Moon and the Earth...
Students need to come to class with all of their materials and ready to review. I am finding many that are still having great difficulty with organizing their materials, help is given but short lived.
Anything that can be done at your end will be helpful as well.

Moon Phases

Today the students worked on learning the phases of the moon through drawing and use of oreo cookies...

Boy what a day!!

I would like the students to continue to review the pages in the book from 20-27. We will be drawing and doing labs to cover the phases, eclipses, and tides for this section. Please be sure that they are reviewing what we are doing during the classtime, the test is on the 27, 28 th.
The test will cover the sections discussed from page 6-27.

Phases of Moon, Eclipses, Tides

This is the name of section three in the book. I have mentioned to the students that they do not have homework but need to catch up on what they owe or may read ahead. I do see that the students who have had difficulty in the past getting work completed on time may be the same ones that continue to have a problem. Some students have done very well getting themselves acclimated to the schedule while others continue to struggle. Any help at home would be greatly appreciated since the goal is to teach them how to become independent.
So upcoming events will include a moon phase activity with oreo cookies...a project to make the phases with whatever materials are available, and an eclipse activity designing the two types of eclipses.
I appreciate all of your support with educating your son or daughter. Grades are due in by Oct. 14th for the 5 week reports. You will be contacted if need be by your teacher.

Pages 16-19

The students from groups 1 and 2 owe me the questions from the bottom of page 19 on Tuesday. We will be having a short quiz as well on the material discussed in that section. I am a bit disappointed in the lack of follow through with homework assignments.
Please be sure to check your son or daughters planner to see what has been assigned. The school is open for many hours into the evening each night if they have left something here, do not send you child into the school alone for safety reasons to go back to their lockers please.
Group 3 and 4 will have a quiz on Thursday on this material, their questions are due on Tuesday.

Section 2 pages 16-19

Hello,
I have been working with the students on the next section in the Astronomy book. Pages 16-19 deal with Gravity and Motion and their effect on Earth and the Moon's orbit. I have had the students write the vocabulary on index cards, word on the front and definition on the back. I would like them to color it as well.
The homework for groups 1 and 2 that I saw today is to do the questions on page 19 in complete sentences and on loose leaf paper so that I can collect it.
I would appreciate those students that needed to correct their test to do so this weekend and get it in to me by Monday for adjustment in their grade.
5-week reports are due Oct. 8, they do not get sent home for a long time, not sure why but...
I will send home a copy of grades with each student on Oct. 8 due to the late delivery.

Core Extention needs to complete their study area at home worksheet and color it as well as get your signature. This is due on the 7th of Oct.

Section 2

Hello all,
I gave the first quiz today to all of the science classes and see that many of the students have been diligently studying or reviewing and some have not done anything outside of school.
I would encourage a conversation regarding study or review habits with your child as well as reminding them to bring what they need to class each day. Many are asking to return to their locker to get materials. A reminder that the school is open in the eve. to return to get materials if necessary.

Ski club interest---see me...

Well, we have discussed the motion of the Earth around the sun as well as the moon around the Earth. I have asked the students to attemp to find the moon each day, whether it was visible during the day or night. Many were successful while others were unable to locate it. I am certain that as the moon enters the waxing stages they will be more apt to locate it. We will continue this for the remainder of Sept. and into Oct.
We have read through pages 6 and 7, 10-13. We have taken notes to demonstrate how to find out what is important in the reading as well as drawing pictures to depict the concepts discussed. Most of the first few pages of the Astronomy packet have been completed.
The pages that should be done or mostly completed are as follows:
pages1 -all
page 2 -the first 3 vocab terms
pages -10-13 much of this was done in class however some needed to complete it for hw.
The students should begin to become familiar with many astronomy related vocabulary terms such as rotation, revolution, axis, and orbit.
